According to Barnabe, Internet Explorer has evolved substantially in the last few years, and the documentation for prior versions is no longer useful for the latest versions.

What developers give is also influenced by the programming language. IE, for example, welcomes.Net code, making non-.Net coders like Barnabe less likely to port their plug-ins across all browsers.

Firefox, on the other hand, has several methods for accessing browser data. Developers can create plug-ins with simple JavaScript or delve into the depths of data structures with C++. Joe Hewitt, one of Firebug’s early creators, used this level of access to construct a debugging platform for watching what happens as a page loaded in the browser.

“I had to write a considerable lot of C++ to hook into APIs that were not exposed through JavaScript,” Hewitt explains, adding that the extra effort was worthwhile. “Because of the amount of power available, Firefox remains the ideal platform for extensions, whereas Chrome and Safari make the process easier but severely limit you.”

Chrome and Safari both have simpler interfaces that are easier to use, particularly for JavaScript programmers. Safari even provides an interface that deconstructs several of the typical plug-in creation choices.

Many of these APIs’ constraints can be worked around by dedicated programmers, but not all. For example, the Cooliris plug-in, which displays content on an infinite wall in three dimensions, is compatible with Firefox on Windows, Mac, and Linux, but not with Chrome on Windows.

“In some circumstances, creative solutions were required,” stated Austin Shoemaker, co-founder and CTO of Cooliris. “The extension API does not always allow us to expand the user interface in the ways we would like. Some limits, on the other hand, simplify the API, and we can typically work around these limitations in native code.”

In other words, simpler JavaScript extensions run on any browser version and can usually be moved from browser to browser with minimum effort. Those that delve deeper into the API and use native code may need to be considerably modified, limiting their usefulness and availability to a limited set of devices.

Cosmetic hacks change what is commonly referred to as the browser’s “skin.” These facelifts are the simplest place to start.

Personas and Themes are the two options for customising the appearance of your browser in Firefox.

It only takes two GIF files to create a fresh look with Firefox’s Persona system.
