Ekta Kapoor has been entertaining us since the mid-1990s, when her serials were not quite as glitzy. They were more interesting and worthwhile to watch. 1. Hasratein (Zee TV)
Seema Kapoor played Saavi in Hasratein, however she was eventually replaced by Shefali Chaya. Savi’s boss, ‘KT,’ was played by Harsh Chhaya, and Savi’s spouse was played by Dharmesh Vyas. The play was a social commentary, and many people could identify with Savi’s character. Savi is married to a professor in Hasratein, but she subsequently falls in love with her boss (played by Harsh). The serial made headlines because of its portrayal of Savi and KT’s adulterous relationship. “Hasratein Hi Hasratein hai aur kya hai,” the title tune, was a smash hit. Savi was played by Seema Kapoor for the first 108 episodes. She was replaced by Shefali Chhaya, who won the Zee Woman of the Year award in 1997 for her services. Ajai Sinha directed Hasratein for a total of 208 weeks (208 episodes). Hasratein began in 1996 and ended in 1999.

2. Aur Shama Jalti Rahi (Aur Shama Jalti Rahi) (Zee TV)
Another popular serial, Aur Shama Jalti Rahi, about a Hyderabadi young girl who was married to an elderly man. Serial was not well received by the general public, but reviewers praised it for its outstanding acting. Lekh Tandon directed Aur Shama Jalti Rahi.
3. Tara (Zee TV)
This serial, directed by Raman Kumar and featuring Navneet Nishan as Tara, was known for its suspenseful ending. The serial used to end with a shocking twist, and the following day’s episode would make us all laugh at the ridiculous suspense. From February 1993 through 1997, the serial aired on Zee TV at 9 p.m. So, at 9:29 p.m., Tara watchers were treated to the following scenes:
Example 1: You’re having a serious talk when your landline rings (we didn’t have cell phones back then). When Navneet Nishan answers the phone, he is taken aback. The serial comes to a close there. When the series resumes the next day, we hear a postman yelling for the address.
e.g. 2: One person murders the other, and then the doorbell rings, and an actress opens the door, stunned. The serial comes to a close there. The Doodhwala had rung the bell the next day, we discovered.
Aside from the melodramatic tension endings, the serial was a huge hit in India. Amita Nangia, who portrayed Sheena, as well as Alok Nath and Deven Bhojani, who played a gay character in this serial, were all much-liked. Ratna Pathak, Shefali Shetty, Benjamin Gilani, and many other renowned performers appeared in the serial. Tara revolved around Tara, the main character, and her three pals, Kanchan, Arzoo, and Sheena.
4. Zee TV’s Banegi Apni Baat:
Banegi Apni Baat is one of the many Zee TV serials that are still remembered fondly. This show introduced new life to Indian television at the time. This serial was well-known among youths and adults alike, thanks to its memorable title tune. From 1993 until 1997, Banegi Apni Baat broadcast on Zee TV. Banegi Apni Baat starred Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan, Alyy Khan, Surekha Sikri, Aman Khanna, Bollywood actor R. Madhavan, Firdaus Dadi, Ikhlaq Khan, Rakhee Tandon, Sandhya Mridul, and many other actors, and was written by Pranay Singh and directed by Tony Singh and Sunil Prasad. Surprisingly, the hunky Raman Trikha was unable to capitalise on his celebrity.
Banegi Apni Baat centred on the college life of its main characters, including flirtation and campus masti, before showing the path of college students, their families, and their complex lives, as well as exploring a variety of other themes.
5. Zee TV’s Campus:
This was one of Zee TV’s most popular TV shows. “Aaaksh yahi hai apni udaano ka…yeh gulshan hai apne armaano ka..campus..campus,” I can still hear in my head. Campus was a Zee TV collegiate drama series that starred Arif Zakaria, Mahesh Manjrekar, Ninad Kamat, and Milind Gawali in main roles. Campus, according to Milind Gawali, is still his favourite TV show. “Campus will always be extremely important to my heart, 4 years of television success, and all of the work on television that I performed that is over 3000 episodes is all because of Campus, the character Ravi Bhatnager is still remembered by many,” Milind wrote in his blog. Sanjeev Bhattacharya was in charge of the campus. Sanjeev also directed Amanat, a popular television show. In 1998, he died of a heart arrest.
6. Dillagi
Dillagi wasn’t really popular, but it was fun in those days when there weren’t many stations to choose from. There is very little information on this serial available on the internet. If my memory serves me well, this serial starred Benjamin Gillani as a CEO of a corporation, with a parsi/christian? woman playing his adorable and humorous secretary. I recall an Essel World cartoon character named “Kadamba” who used to feature on the show on a regular basis. It was a means for the Zee TV group’s Essel World to gain traction.
7. Amanat
Amanat was possibly the most popular Indian TV serial of the 1990s, directed by the late Sanjiv Bhattacharya. In the 1990s, it had the highest TRP. On August 21, 1997, Zee TV broadcasted its first episode. The plot revolved around Lahori Ram, a typical Indian guy with strong values and beliefs. Santosh, Dinky, Bala, Guddi, Bunty, Munni, and Totey are his seven daughters, each with her own set of quirks and problems. Pooja Madan’s persona was extremely well-liked. Santosh, the eldest daughter, was played by her. Dinky, the second eldest daughter, was played by Gracy Singh, and she was a popular figure. She was placed opposite Aamir Khan in Lagaan and later departed the show. Her career didn’t truly take off after the triumph of Lagaan. We’ve seen a trend where TV actresses leave their series after landing a role in a Bollywood film, but every actor can’t be in every film.
